Aboriginal numeracy competition

The Aboriginal Numeracy Competition (ANC) is a numeracy-based program which has been designed to bridge the gap in numeracy skills between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

Students participate in an interschool mathematics competition where they can develop and display their mathematical skills. As well as competition day, training prior to the events is essential to ensure that competitors are prepared to perform at their very best.

The competition occurs four times each year, once in each term with the schools involved taking turns to host the event. During the course of the event, teams of students rotate around a number of different stations where they are expected to perform a number of different mathematical skills. These range from simple timetable activities to logic puzzles and even complex number skills. Points are awarded to teams for each activity, depending on their relative performances.

Local Indigenous community members are invited to come along and join in, either to watch or get involved in some way. For more information, contact Davina Bowen, Principal, Great Lakes College Senior Campus on 02 6555 0555.
