Career Development is core business in every school. It effectively supports young people to navigate their way through their schooling, to productive and fulfilling post school options. Career Development quality Benchmarks (CEAV, 2010).
Within the framework of the Australian Blueprint for Career Development, Career Education seeks to assist students to develop into responsible lifelong learners and decision makers through the acquisition of competencies in:
- Personal management – through development knowledge and understanding of themselves and others as individuals, including the personal resources (both actual and potential) they bring to situations.
- Learning and work exploration– through development knowledge and understanding of the general structure of post-school life including the range of work and study/training opportunities, the alternative pathways to each, and the demands, rewards and satisfaction associated with each.
- Career building - through developing the learning and skills to make considered choices and plan options in relation to anticipated or desired career pathways and also the attitudes and skills needed to manage the information of the considered choices and the career transitions in school and in post-school life.
- Career Education, as a specialised field of career development, is concerned with the career development needs of all students at every stage of their personal and educational development, irrespective of whether their study program develops an academic or a vocational focus. It is truly cross-curricular in its scope and application.
